The Kerala Story’ movie review: Adah Sharma’s performance marred by half-truths and an emotionally exploitative gaze
There is a tale waiting to be told about the radicalization and trafficking of impressionable females to spread terror. However, after years of investigation, filmmaker Sudipto Sen's telling of The Kerala Story is more absurdist than an accurate portrayal of the issue. The film retains a polarising tone and the gaze is emotionally invasive; it is more like a companion piece to The Kashmir Files. Like the racists in the movie, it appears that the film's creators are eager to incite hatred among viewers and give it a public voice.
It centres on three nursing students in Kerala who are brainwashed by an extremist group into believing that their gods are false, according to reports that claim to be based on actual accounts of how innocent non-Muslim girls are recruited for the Islamic State.
One such girl, Shalini or Fatima Ba (Adah Sharma), is converted and sent to Syria with her husband to support the Islamic State's cause. She describes how she and her two friends, Geetanjali (Siddhi Idnani) and Nimah (Yogita Bihani), were persuaded to join the expedition by another classmate Asifa (Sonia Balani), and ended up being captured and imprisoned in Afghanistan. Shalni loses the battle, leaving the other two to struggle against the evil plan.
The presentation becomes more and more influenced by local politics rather than cinematic sagacity, despite the fact that the concept requires attention and emotional involvement. There are some moving moments, but for the most part, it's either the impressionable girls who are eager to believe the propaganda or cunning guys.
The lengthy sections on brainwashing dull your senses since the creators' comprehension of communism, Islam, or any other doctrine sounds as contemptible as the villains' understanding of Christianity and Hinduism. The ideas about Islam and conversion appear to have come from WhatsApp groups that promote hatred. Sen, who has an adult certificate in hand, uses brutality to elicit an emotional response from the audience by leaving little to the audience's imagination.
It's odd that the authors don't situate the tale in the intricate geopolitical questions of who founded Islamic State and why its heart isn't breaking for the cause of Palestine. Instead of challenging it, it is busy decapitating women for wearing lipstick in places where there is a political void.
However, it is nice to see Kerala's picturesque splendour in a Hindi film, and it is effectively contrasted with Afghanistan's harsh terrain.
Adah Sharma gives a sincere performance in which she perfectly conveys the suffering of the defenceless Shalini, who is robbed of her purity yet has her wits about her. She makes the role more convincing by incorporating a Malayali accent into her Hindi. The remainder participate in an unprofessional exercise where all of their emotions must be displayed. Overall, the novel is full of provocative language but contains little thought.
